An interactive wilderness mystery

Just North of Somewhere

Every trail
has a story.

A routine shelter inspection. An overdue survey worker.
A wilderness with more to discover.

Beyond the last maintained road

01 / The assignment

The map says
one thing.
The ground says
another.

You came to check the shelters.
The walk becomes something more.

North Reach Reserve is a protected watershed of recovering woods, old farms, mill roads, and scattered shelters. Your job is simple: walk the route and report what is still usable.

An overdue colleague draws you further into the reserve. Along the way, you meet people with their own reasons for being here—and questions that a routine report cannot answer.

Explore at your own pace, listen carefully, and decide what to share. Weather, time, and the choices you make give each journey its own weight.

The mystery has a truth.
What happens next belongs to you.

I / Pay attention

Read more than the words.

Notice changing light, water over stone, and the details a hurried walk might miss. The landscape has a life of its own.

II / Choose your words

People keep their own account.

Ask, listen, report, or withhold. Your promises and statements can come back to you. Trust grows through what you actually do.

III / Mind the weather

A route is a decision.

Rain changes crossings. Daylight changes your options. Shelter, supplies, and preparation matter when another person needs your help.

Bust portrait of Ruth Ansel with a steady, attentive expression

The district ranger

Ruth Ansel

Your supervisor, your practical contact, and the person who needs an accurate report. She remembers the difference between what you saw and what you assumed.

Bust portrait of Kit Bell with a curious, relaxed expression

The overdue survey worker

Kit Bell

Her work takes her along the reserve’s quieter paths. When she misses a check-in, a routine assignment takes on a new urgency.

Bust portrait of June Pell with a thoughtful, reserved expression

The orchard volunteer

June Pell

She knows the family names behind the place names. Over the radio and on the trail, shared time can become trust—if you respect what is hers to share.

Bust portrait of Owen Marr with a quietly friendly expression

The crossing contractor

Owen Marr

He knows which repairs hold and which only look reassuring. Practical judgment can earn help when the weather makes every route harder.

And somewhere within radio range, a voice that hasn’t given you a name.

05 / A few steps into the story

What do you
notice first?

A painted world, brought close through words. Look around, check what you’re carrying, read an item, or listen.

In JNOS, ordinary actions carry the story: looking, talking, travelling, reading, resting, and deciding what to do with what you learn.

Field notebook

South Gate / Before the walk

A moment at the edge.

Beyond the roadside trees, the hills carry the colours of the season.

You have a backpack, a field map, a radio, and a day’s walk ahead of you.

A breeze moves through the branches. For a moment, you stand still and listen.

The reserve waits.

Before you set out

A few
bearings.

What kind of game is JNOS?

A rich interactive text adventure set in a painted wilderness. Exploration, grounded suspense, relationships, and the practical demands of travel share the same world. You read the scene and act through commands or available actions.

Does the wilderness change?

Painted scenes shift through all four seasons, with live weather, a day and night cycle, and a sun, moon, and stars overhead. They affect the places you visit and the routes you can take. A crossing you understood yesterday may need a fresh look today.

How do I play?

Type your commands, or use the on-screen buttons. A handheld radio brings calls you can answer, miss, or return, and time passes as you travel, rest, and wait. The game runs fully offline, with no account required.

Do choices have consequences?

People remember what you tell them and how you treat them. Preparedness, time, privacy, and accurate reporting matter. Serious danger is signposted, your decisions shape the journey.

When can I play?

A wilderness story

What will you
carry out of the woods?

A name. A promise. A different account of what happened.
Or a reason to come back.
